A very nice sculpture of the god wearing a sacrificial victim's skin. In pre-Hispanic mexico, the flayed lord was the god of fertility and the life/death cycle. They would sacrifice the victims, the priest would wear their skin, and then the skin would be buried at the foot of the altar.

I've been starting to dislike my job more than I did. I'm a library page, which means lots of shelving, picking books off the shelves for interlibrary loans, picking up messes, answering basic questions like where the bathroom is. I used to be neutral about it but now I want to leave more, yet I still can't get a better job, which I would need to also live alone, which is another thing I want. It's not challenging me enough nor does it provide me with enough hours.

I also dislike about half the patrons for being disgusting people or toxic people. There was an antisemitic holocaust denial incident last year. There's a man who stinks permanently yet he's still allowed in to stink up half the upper mezzanine. He smells so bad the pages in general can't go near to shelve the books. I think the library is the only place that allows him. It's probably a medical condition he doesn't have incentive to deal with. He has several apple devices and they aren't old, so it's not that he's poor. There's also an aggressive older man who increased my fear of white men with certain facial types just by existing. He needs a permanent ban. There's an old woman lying through her teeth about whether her dog is a service dog. There was this guy who I swear called the library staff "the help".

Then there's the parents who are checked out and leave their kids to run all over. There was a mom who sucked at parenting so bad another patron (Fierce Old Lady who gets the old newspapers) scolded them while the mom looked on in embarrassment from across the room. That mom had been doing stuff on her phone while her kids ran around the lower levels playing tag and screaming. The children's librarian had to tell her twice to restrain her kids. Then she decided to check out the books and her kids started playing tag in the lobby while screaming some more. That was when the Fierce Old Lady scolded them. It was also a sunny day so they could have gone to the nearby park but no.

There was also the mom who was using a free computer while her son tried to attach himself to anyone who showed him interest and while her other daughters tried to avoid her son even though the mom had parentified them (she told them to watch him while she did the computer stuff). The little boy (walking, talking coherently, short stories) couldn't have been older than kindergarten and he was desperately lonely. He glommed onto me when I said hello and started talking to me like a tiny waterfall. His mom had dumped him in the picture books to amuse himself yet he couldn't read the books. His sisters did not want to watch him at all and were only watching him because their mom ordered them to so they lurked in the mystery cubbies while he wandered around trying to find them. They were about 10-ish and very close in age as well as in friendship. It was clear from the situation that the little boy wasn't wanted by either his mom or his sisters.

Here's a picture from my attempt to find comet 46p Wirtanen, aka the christmas comet. I think I found it, which I'm really proud of.

I just saw this movie today and it’s one of the best war movies I’ve ever seen and probably in my top movies of the year. The editing, colorizing, effects, everything combined to make a movie about the people in the war really human.

In the best tradition of war movies, nothing is censored. Neither the dead bodies tangled in barbed wire, not the dead bodies carpeting the trenches and no-,man’s-land, not the piles of dead horses, not the reality of dirt and blood nor the unsanitary conditions are glossed over. There are scenes of captured German soldiers and British soldiers being friendly as well as footage from a charge over No Man’s Land. Just about everything is accompanied by the scream and thump of artillery.

In a voiceover one of the soldiers tells how if someone died or was wounded in the middle they were just left there and were plowed under the tanks. In a lot of the scenes at the front there were incidental dead bodies everywhere.

Also the soldiers were weirdly human. In one trench they saw the camera and froze, thinking it was some kind of still camera. In another area a man tripped into a ditch while looking backwards at the camera. In another one a soldier called to his fellow soldiers that they were on camera a lot like a modern day guy would. In another scene just before a battle a young soldier was petrified with terror and the only way you could tell he was alive was the soldier next to him smoking.

I very much liked this movie and I’m glad I got to see it. Being in a movie theatre definitely was worth it. It's one of my favorites this year.

A link to a video of rescue workers digging out bodies post-tsunami.

In a side note, there's this horrifying/excellent flickr account, historicalbodies, that posts nothing but pictures of dead bodies whether mummified, skeletonized, or more recently dead. All historical, of course.

I found some posts hidden because of allegedly nsfw content and I couldn't even see them like I was supposed to or even request a review. I sent all the ones I could find off to tumblr support for review but meanwhile i am going back to the python backup to backup the month of december before I'm brought down over breadsticks or whatever the algorithm thinks is porn this time.

Note: They did not flag the anatomical venuses who look like murder victims but are actually teaching devices from the 1700s. http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20160526-why-these-anatomical-models-are-not-disgusting

EDIT: also flagged 12/22/18-> shakespeare actors napping on couches, male nipples of actors who had big enough muscles they registered as female boobs, genderqueer nipples that were part of an art piece by an pro artist.

So on one hand they're getting better at identifying nipples but on the other not really.

I found out after I got an email notifying me I had a new follower.

BUT

That new follower looks to be a porn bot but since everyone is wearing bikinis or athleisure it passes the algorithm sniff test.

I did succeed in de-drm-ing my books but it took a few hours as I first had to download an old program, "nook for pc" because it allowed users to download copies of books to their hard drive for safekeeping. Barnes and Noble had discontinued it a few years ago in their quest to put everything under their control. Stripping DRM was actually easier than backing up my blog.

2 things used:
* calibre
* apprentice alf's tutorial

Also happening is Tumblr's great purge in a few hours and I hope I'll survive it. I think I scratched out all nsfw stuff but I may have missed a few illustrations along the lines of pinups.

I did do a penis friday of sorts but since it was entirely rock art several thousand years old I think the censors will just see rocks. It took me a few minutes of searching to see the dicks but unless you look it just looks like generic Libyan rock.

Weirdly enough tumblr didn't flag my post about the Warren cup, which is a cup of 2 couples having sex and is also almost 2,000 years old
